My mum applied in July 2017, and will be 74 yo this year. She has no other family in the UK and is essentially in limbo waiting for this visa. She is missing out on the quality of life and relations with my family and me. My children are growing up and they are missing out on a richer relationship with her. As time goes by the risk of her being unable to actually manage a flight over here increases. The time frame for application was around 36 months I believe.
